The individual matches in the spotlight
One of the most common ways to bet curling is on a match-by-match basis. In this format, you will be either picking the winner of a match straight up or in a handicap format. The moneyline, or straight up, bet will require you to simply pick the winner of a match. There will be odds such as -200 on the favorite and +180 on the underdog in this situation. For your wager to win, you’ll just need to correctly pick the winning team.
In a handicap situation, one team will be favored by a certain number of stones. For example, Team A may be -3.5 stones in a match against Team B. If you bet on Team A, they’d have to win by a margin of 4 or more points to win. If you bet on Team B, they’d have to lose by 3 or fewer points to win.
You can also bet on the total number of points scored in a particular match. Sportsbooks will often list an over/under line on a match. This line may be something along the lines of 15.5. This means that a bet on the over would be successful only if the two teams combined to score 16 or more points in the match, and the under would be successful if 15 or fewer points were scored.
Predicting the tournament outcome
Curling provides a variety of betting options for pre-tournament wagers. In these type of wagers, you will be picking the outright winner of the tournament, the two finalists or the player of the tournament, for example. Modern sportsbooks will list odds for a variety of different wagers for all of these types of bets. Perhaps the most common type of pre-tournament bet to make is on the outright winning team for the 2020 Tim Hortons Brier. Each team that is participating in the event will be listed as available to bet on, with each having different odds depending on if they are favorites to win, or if they are more longshots.
Some of the favorites may have odds listed at -200, for example, meaning you’d have to wager $200 to win $100. Some of the longshots may be listed at +500, meaning a $100 wager would net you $500 if your bet was successful. Similar betting options are available for picking one of the teams who will be the finalist of the entire tournament. Some sportsbooks will also offer special bets on player of the match, player of the tournament and other alternate betting lines and a good example comes here.
The 2020 Tim Hortons Brier is being held in March
The 2020 version of the Tim Hortons Brier will be held from February 29 through March 8 in Leon’s Centre in Kingston, Ontario. Each province in Canada is represented by one team in the Brier, except for Ontario, which sends two teams. In total, there will be 16 teams competing at the 2020 event. To qualify for the Brier, teams compete throughout the year in championships that are held within their own province. These provincial championships, as they are known, are held each year and are open to any men’s curling team in Canada.
The tournament separates the teams into two groups of eight. A round robin will be played in each of these groups, with the top four teams advancing to the second pool, which will eventually determine the final four teams. The 2019 champions was the team from Alberta, made up of Kevin Koe, B.J. Neufeld, Colton Flasch and Ben Hebert.
