Pick the winner, or the finalists, of the entire tournament
The first type of bets on the 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships falls under the category of futures bets. These are designed so that you will make a wager selection before the tournament begins, and the results of the entire tournament will determine the outcome of your wager.
The most common type of future bets for this tournament is picking the outright winner of the entire event. Each team that is participating in the tournament will be assigned odds by the online sportsbooks to win the tournament outright. The better teams will be considered the favorites and will therefore have the shortest odds to win.
Canada, which has won this tournament 18 times (including in 2020), is sure to be among the favorites again in 2021. As such, they may have very short odds of +125 to win the tournament. That means that if you bet $100 on Canada to win and they do, then you’d win $125.
Another future betting option is to select one team to be a finalist. This means that all your team would have to do for your wager to be successful is to reach the Gold Medal game. Since this is easier to do than pick the outright winner, online sportsbooks will adjust the odds for each team down. Canada, in this example, may have odds of only -125 to reach the Gold Medal game.
How wagering on individual games works
If you’d rather bet on individual games of the 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, you’ll have no shortage of options to do so. The three most common ways to bet on individual games include moneyline betting, handicap (or puck line) betting and total goals (or over/under) betting.
With moneyline betting, all you need to focus on is the winner of a particular game. It doesn’t matter how many goals are scored in the game or how many goals your team wins by. In that respect, this is one of the simplest ways to wager on individual games.
Online sportsbooks will set a favorite for each game, and then adjust the odds accordingly. For example, Canada may be considered the favorite in a game against Finland. They may have moneyline odds of -175, with Finland getting odds of +150. That means you’d have to wager $175 to win $100 on Canada, while a $100 bet on Finland would net you $150 if it were successful.
For handicap wagers, the online sportsbooks will set an against-the-spread line, which in hockey is more commonly known as a puck line. In most games, the puck line will be -1.5, although in the 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, that number could go higher depending on the teams involved.
In a game between two evenly-matched opponents, one team may be favored over another by 1.5 goals. This means the favorite would have to win by 2 or more goals for a wager on them to be successful. At the same time, for a wager to be successful on the underdog, that team would have to lose by 1 goal or win the game outright.
The third common way to bet on individual hockey games is the total goals line, which is sometimes known as the over/under line. In this type of bet, all you’ll be doing is wagering on the total number of combined goals the two teams will score in the game, regardless of which team actually wins the game.
The online sportsbooks will set a total goals line for each game, for example, 6.5. For a bet on the over to be successful in this scenario, the two teams would have to score 7 or more goals combined. For a wager on the under to be successful, the two teams would have to score 6 or fewer goals combined. So, the rules are very easy and people who have ever tried the following bookmaker know that it is easy to trust him again.
The tournament returns to Edmonton and Red Deer
The 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships will mark the 14th time that the world’s premier youth hockey tournament will be held in Canada. The two host cities will be Edmonton (at the larger Rogers Place) and Red Deer (at the smaller Westerner Park Centrium). The tournament will begin on December 26, 2020, and will end on January 5, 2021.
There will be 10 teams competing in the tournament, split into two groups. Group A will feature Canada, Finland, Switzerland, Slovakia and Germany. Group B will feature Russia, Sweden, the United States, the Czech Republic and Austria. Each group will play a round-robin tournament, with the top four from each group advancing to the Quarterfinals. The tournament will progress in a single-elimination tournament from then on.
Canada has won the tournament 18 times, including last year. They have also won the Silver medal 9 times and the Bronze Medal 5 times. The next most Gold Medals have been won by the former Soviet Union (8). Finland ranks next with 5 (the last being in 2019). The United States (last won in 2017) and Russia (last won in 2011) each have 4 Gold Medals.
To qualify for the tournament, players must have their 20th birthday in the year of the tournament’s ending, and at latest by the fifth year after the tournament’s ending. That means players must be born in 2001 at the latest.
