How the US Masters is played

A golf club and ballThe US Masters is a four-day tournament consisting of 18 holes played by each golfer for each round. While this is a major tournament on the PGA Tour, it is an invitational event. Golfers must be invited to compete by the Augusta National Golf Club. As such, the field of golfers is smaller than many of the other major golf tournaments throughout the year. All golfers play the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday. After the second day, there is a cut. To move onto the final two rounds of the tournament, a golfer must be either within 50 laces or within 10 strokes of the leader’s score. All other golfers will be “cut” and won’t proceed in the tournament.

After all four rounds have been played, the golfer with the lowest score will win. He will be awarded a ceremonial green jacket, which he will keep for one year and return at the start of the US Masters tournament the following year.

Interesting to know
Tiger Woods has won the event five times and is on second place, right after Jack Nicklaus, who has won the event six times.

Make it easier to pick a winner

While there have been a fair share of players who have won The Masters multiple times, it is still a very tough thing to pick the correct winner among a crowded field. That’s why one of the more popular and effective ways to bet on The Masters is to bet on a golfer to finish in the top 10 of the final standings. Online sportsbooks will set odds for each golfer before the tournament starts about whether he will finish in the top 10.

Those odds will obviously be lower than those for picking the outright winner of the tournament, but you have a better chance of correctly picking a golfer to finish in the top 10 than you do to win the tournament. There hasn’t been a repeat winner of The Masters since Tiger Woods did it in 2001 and 2002. However, there have been plenty of instances where the same few golfers have consistently finished near the top of the leaderboard.

Golf’s top players

According to the official World Golf Rankings, the sport’s top players currently are Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Cantlay, Tiger Woods, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood. Of that list, only Tiger Woods has won The Masters, and he has done so an amazing five times. He even surprised the golfing world by winning last year’s tournament.

Woods has also finished as the runner-up two times (in 2008 and 2007). Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele tied for runner-up last year, only one stroke behind Woods. Justin Rose has actually finished as runner-up two times, losing in a playoff to Sergio Garcia in 2017, and finishing four strokes behind Jordan Spieth in 2015.

Why you should choose a handicap wager

One alternate way of betting on The Masters is to bet on winning margin. This type of bet is very similar to handicap bets that online sportsbooks offer for other sports that have more traditional matchups between two players or two teams. In golf, the online sportsbook will set a hypothetical matchup between two golfers, and then set a handicap line between them. For example, the matchup in question might be Tiger Woods versus Justin Rose.

Tiger WoodsJustin Rose
-3,5+4

In this matchup, the online sportsbook may set the handicap line of Woods -3.5. This would mean that if you want to place a wager on Woods, he’d have to finish the entire tournament 4 or more strokes better than Rose for you to win. Conversely, a bet on Rose would win if he finished the tournament 3 or fewer strokes behind Woods at the end.

Great ways to bet on the tournament

One of the best ways to be on The Masters is to pick a top 10 finisher. As mentioned before, it can be tough to pick a single winner out of the entire field, but it’s a lot easier to pick a golfer who will finish near the top of the leaderboard. Go with a golfer who has traditionally done well at this course and in this tournament and keep in mind this outright odds overview.

You’ll also want to take a look at how each of the golfers have been playing leading up to The Masters. The Players Championship is a big tournament that is held before The Masters. Golfers who perform well there could be in line for a similar solid performance at The Masters. Finally, make sure that you read up on any injuries or ailments that any of the golfers are facing. That could lead to a poor performance if it’s something that would alter their swing or hamper them all week.

It`s an event like no other

The Masters is more than just an annual golf tournament. It is perhaps the most prestigious golf tournament on the PGA Tour every year. There is a lot of pageantry and tradition that surrounds the event, and the golf world takes it very seriously. From a golf betting perspective, The Masters is a lot of fun to wager on. It can bring back some good rewards in your pocket, too, if you do your research and find a diamond in the rough. Going with a top 10 finish or a winning margin bet may be more advisable than picking a winner of the tournament, as it could be easier to find a winner.

The tournament is a must for every serious bettor. Not only is it very entertaining, but it can be very profitable for punters too.
