Single wagers are gaining momentum

A glove, a baseball and dollar billsThe legalization of single game betting in Canada has been gaining some momentum in the last few years, but has ramped up recently for a number of reasons. Many lawmakers and candidates for office in Canada have made legalizing the practice a part of their platform, pointing toward the loss opportunities for revenue and the fact that many people in Canada are already betting on single sports – just not with a Canadian-based casino. Recently, one lawmaker in Windsor-Essex pointed to another reason that Canada should legalize single sports betting — because border states in America are doing it, and Canada will soon lose business across the border if they don’t hurry up and get something passed.

They`ll will be playing catch up

Kevin Laforet, the regional president of Caesars Windsor, said it was disappointing that Canada hasn’t legalized single sports betting yet, especially as the United States has done it and is moving quickly toward legalization across the country.

“We’ll be playing catch up, which is frustrating,” he said. “We just have to drive it now.”

As Paul Burns, the CEO of the Canadian Gaming Association said, the fact that border states in the U.S. such as Michigan are working toward legalizing single betting in their states, Canada could be in for a rude awakening.

“Border states in the U.S. will soon begin to take business away, threatening jobs in Canadian communities while we continue to sit on the sidelines,” he said.

For some, such as Dave Cassidy, the president of Unifor Local 444, it’s essential for Canada to legalize single betting before Michigan does so that Canada doesn’t lose these precious jobs.

Many of these comments were made at a recent roundtable that was hosted by the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce and Unifor Local 444. Political representatives such as NDP MP Brian Masse attended the event, and they said there’s a great opportunity for the region to capitalize on single sports wagering. A missed opportunity thus far

The debate over single sports wagering has been raging on for close to a decade now, and as it has, opportunity has gone done the drain, according to some. In fact, Burns said he believes that single betting could be a $14 million industry all by itself. That’s why it’s so important that Canada stop dragging its feet and get the practice legalized, he said.

In the last 10 years, Canadian lawmakers have tried twice to pass single wagering, but both times, the measures failed. Now, though, Burns believes it stands a good chance.

“[All these parties] are willing to work together to make this happen. There’s a real desire,” he said. “The community has been asking for this.”
It’s not just private companies, the gaming industry and bettors who have desired this, either. The Ontario government has asked for single betting to be legalized eight times in the last 10 years, Burns said.

The great news for Canada is that, even though it has fallen behind the U.S., it can catch up quickly. Masse said he believes that if there were “political will” behind passing single betting, it could be legalized in just a few weeks. Legislation could get introduced and pushed through quickly, and then with casinos already set up throughout the country, single betting could be offered soon after. Want to bet on sports now?
