How the German Bundesliga is played
The first season of the German Bundesliga was 1963. It’s the top league in Germany and works in conjunction with the 2. Bundesliga as the second tier of German football.
Each club in the league plays each other club twice during the season — once at home and once away. Points are accumulated throughout the season’s matches, with three points being given for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. The club with the most points at the end of the season is crowned the champion of the German Bundesliga for that year.
At the end of the season, the top four clubs in the standings automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League group phase. The bottom two teams in the standings are relegated to the 2. Bundesliga for the next season, while the top two teams from the second-tier league are promoted to the top tier. The 16th place team in the top tier also plays the third place team in the lower tier in a two-leg playoff, with the winner playing the following season in the top tier and the loser playing in the lower tier.
|The German Bundesliga belongs to the best leagues in the world. Also, it is the league with the highest attendance per game.|
The top clubs
Of the 18 clubs in the current iteration of the German Bundesliga, Werder Bremen, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have been in the league the longest – for 56, 55 and 53 seasons, respectively. In terms of success, though, there’s really only one team to talk about – Bayern Munich. That club has won an astounding 28 titles. The next closest club to them are Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Moenchengladbach, who each have five league titles.
Bayern Munich is not only the most successful clubs in German Bundesliga history, but it’s also one of the more successful European clubs internationally. They have won one European Cup Winners’ Cup, one UEFA Super Cub, one UEFA Cup, two Intercontinental cups and one FIFA Club World Cup. Among its best players are Poland’s Robert Lewandowski, Germany’s Thomas Muller and Thiago Alcantara of Spain.

A new way to enjoy – in play wagers
It used to be not that long ago that the only way to bet on the German Bundesliga, and all sports actually, was to do so before a match began. Now, though, the internet has made it very easy to bet while matches are going on. This is known as in play betting and it’s possibly the most popular way to bet on sports matches today. That’s because it allows sports bettors to get a feel for how the actual game is unfolding before placing a wager, instead of just relying on forecasts and pre-game predictions. Online sportsbooks will adjust the original odds of a match based on how the match is unfolding.
Bayern Munich may be a -250 favorite against Borussia Dortmund in a match, but if Borussia Dortmund jumps out to a quick 2-0 lead, the sportsbooks will adjust the odds accordingly. If that happens, online sportsbooks may adjust the odds to Bayern Munich +200 to overcome the deficit and win the match. If you still believe in the club’s ability to win the game, this would give you a great opportunity to cash in with much better odds.
A popular futures wager – picking the champion
The German Bundesliga isn’t all about just betting on individual matches. There are plenty of opportunities to place wagers on what’s called futures bets. One of the most common futures bets to make on the league is selecting the champion of the entire league. Most of the time, sports bettors will place these wagers before the season begins, although some online sportsbooks will continuously update these futures odds throughout the season – up to a certain point and here is an example.
|Team||Odds for winning the Championship|
|FC Bayern Munich||-225|
Each club in the German Bundesliga will be assigned odds to win the league based on the likelihood of them doing so. Bayern Munich, because of its past success, will most likely be assigned some of the lowest odds in the league. They may have odds of -400 or so to win the German Bundesliga. This means you’d need to bet $400 to win $100.
Other longshot clubs may be assigned much longer odds, such as +600, to become the German Bundesliga champion. In this case, a $100 on such a club would net you $600 if you were to pick correctly.
Another futures wager – qualifying for Europe
If you aren’t as keen on selecting a single winner of the German Bundesliga — or if you don’t like the very short odds on the favorite that are likely with Bayern Munich — then another futures bet option would be to wager on a club to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Because the top four teams in the final German Bundesliga standings automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League group phase, this means you’d essentially be placing a wager on a club to finish among the top four of the league at season’s end. This is an easier feat to accomplish, so the odds for a club to do this would be shorter than those to win the league outright.
This is also a very popular wager for sports bettors to place on the German Bundesliga specifically, at least partly because of Bayern Munich’s dominance in the league. The club has been crowned the league champion in each of the last seven seasons. In fact, since 1998, a club other than Bayern Munich has won the German Bundesliga title only six times — Borussia Dortmund (2001-02, 2010-11 and 2011-12), Werder Bremen (2003-04), VfB Stuttgart (2006-07) and VfL Wolfsburg (2008-09).
Wagering on the worst of the best, or the best of the worst
A final popular future wager on the German Bundesliga is placing a bet on which club may face relegation to the second-tier league or may be promoted up to the top tier. You’ll find more sportsbooks outside of Germany that will offer wagers on clubs from the German Bundesliga being relegated down than vice versa, if only because the second-tier league isn’t nearly as popular.
In this scenario, you’ll be selecting which club you think will be among the worst in the country’s top football league, which is completely counter to what sports betting normally is – betting on the winners. Again, the bottom two teams in the final standings will automatically be relegated to the second-tier league. The 16th-place team also faces off against the third-place team from the second-tier in a two-leg playoff, with the loser being relegated to the second-tier league.
Get in on the action
The German Bundesliga may not have the same name recognition as other football leagues in the world, namely the English Premier League, but it is, in fact, one of the best. and one of my favorite leagues. It is consistently ranked as one of the top leagues, with some of the top players being featured on some of Germany’s top teams. There is always a lot of attention on the German Bundesliga, especially on its top club Bayern Munich, which means there will be a lot of betting action each season. By studying the odds and finding a gem, you could be well on your way to cashing in with the German Bundesliga.
