A double round-robin season
A typical season in La Liga starts in August and ends in May, although this season (and maybe next) will be a little different because of the halt in play due to coronavirus. Each of the 20 clubs plays each other club twice during the season, once at home and once away, for a total of 38 matches. Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a loss. Standings are compiled based on teams that have the most points. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned the champion.
There are two divisions in La Liga — the Primera and Segunda. The three lowest-placed teams in La Liga at the end of the season are relegated to the Segunda Division, with the top two teams from Segunda promoted to La Liga automatically. A third team from Segunda is promoted to La Liga based on a playoff series between the third- through sixth-place teams.

Two clubs dominate La Liga
Like many other football leagues around the world, there are a few favorite clubs among fans. In La Liga, there are two clubs that dominate all others — Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Since La Liga was founded 91 years ago in 1929, only nine different clubs have been crowned champion. That’s not a lot at all, but it’s because Real Madrid has won the title 33 times, and FC Barcelona has won 26 times.
These two clubs have featured some of the best players in the world, and have often featured the top scorer in the league. Real Madrid’s current roster includes Sergio Ramos, Gareth Bale, Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, Raphael Varane, Thibaut Courtois and Casemiro. FC Barcelona’s current roster includes Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, Neto, Antoine Griezmann and perhaps the world’s best player, Lionel Messi.

Wager as the matches are going on
One of the most popular way to bet on sports nowadays is what’s called In-game betting. Instead of placing wagers before matches starts as is the tradition, this type of bet allows you to place a wager after the game has already started. In La Liga, there are plenty of opportunities for placing just this type of In-game bet. Sportsbooks will adjust the odds on all the different types of bets they are offering — from moneyline, to three-way, to handicap to total goals — as the game progresses. One club may start off the game as the favorite, for example, but then switch to becoming the underdog for the In-game betting depending on what is happening in the actual game.
For example, Real Madrid may be a -130 favorite over FC Barcelona, who is a +135 underdog in a match. However, if FC Barcelona takes a 2-0 lead in the first half, then the In-game betting lines will adjust substantially. In this hypothetical case, FC Barcelona may become a -175 In-game favorite, while Real Madrid switches to a +155 In-game underdog. The In-game odds will continue to update throughout the match depending on different major events, such as goals, injuries, infractions and the such.
Choose the overall winner of the league
One of the most popular futures wagers to place on La Liga is picking the champion of the league. This is perhaps the simplest form of futures betting on La Liga and the sport in general. All it requires you to do is to pick the one club that you think will finish atop the league standings at the end of the season.
Before the season even begins, sportsbooks will set odds for each club in La Liga based on the likelihood that they will end the season as the La Liga Champion. Those clubs considered the favorites will have shorter odds, and those clubs considered the underdogs will have longer odds. Some sportsbooks will even update the odds as the season progresses, up until a certain point. The odds will be adjusted based on the actual point standings as matches are completed.
For example, Real Madrid may have preseason odds of -140 to win La Liga, while Celta Vigo has odds of +650. This means you would have to wager $140 to win $100 with Real Madrid. Meanwhile, a $100 wager on Celta Vigo would net you $650 if they end up becoming the champion.
Wager on UEFA qualifiers
If you don’t have a great idea of what team you think might become La Liga Champion, another future wager you could place is on qualifying teams for the UEFA Champions League. Each season, the top four teams in the final standings of La Liga automatically qualify for the next season’s UEFA Champions League group stage.
Also automatically qualifying are the winning clubs of the UEFA Champions League from the season before and the champion of the UEFA Europa League. The most clubs that can qualify for the UEFA Champions League each year is five. There are some other rules about how clubs can qualify for the Champions League.
If you’d rather take this route, you can wager on which club will qualify. In this way, you are basically picking your club to finish in the top four places in the standings. This certainly makes it easier to win your wager than picking just the one club that will finish as the champion. At the same time, because it is easier to do this, the odds for choosing a club to qualify for the UEFA Champions League will be lower than they will for picking La Liga Champion.
Get in on the action as the clubs hit the pitch again
As La Liga is preparing to re-start its season in the near future, it’s time for you to start your research so that you can be prepared once the clubs hit the pitch. There are plenty of soccer betting opportunities in La Liga, whether you want to be on individual matches or on future outcomes such as picking the league champion.
