Pick the league champion
With the start of the Ligue 1 season still about two months away, one of the most popular wagers you can make right now is on the outright winner of the 2020-2021 season. With this wager, you’ll be trying to select the club that you think will emerge atop the standings at the end of the season.
Sportsbooks will set odds for each club in the league based on their likelihood of taking home the crown. The clubs with the best chances will have the shortest odds, and the clubs with the worst chances will have the longest odds. Some sportsbooks will continue to update these odds for at least part of the season, and adjust the prices based on how the season is unfolding.
|PSG has been the best team of the league since more than a decade. Interestingly, their two most expensive players had a combined pricetag of a little bit over 400 million Euros (ca. 485 million USD).|
Finding a value pick among outright winners
On March 13, the Ligue 1 2019-2020 season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. The season will start again on June 17, and the league hopes to complete that season by the end of July. How it will affect the start of the 2020-2021 season is uncertain at this point.
When the season was suspended, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) had a sizeable lead in the standings. They were 12 points ahead of second-place Marseille with 11 matches to go. This makes betting on the outright winner of the 2019-2020 season not very attractive — if any sportsbooks will even offer that wager anymore.
With such a big lead, PSG has been listed as a huge favorite to win the league title at most sportsbooks, where they have odds of roughly -100000. That makes betting on them not really worth it at all. It would mean you’d need to wager $100,000 just to win $100 on PSG!
If you’re interested in still placing a wager on the outright winner of this season, your best bet would be to look for value in clubs that may have an outside chance to win. Marseille is currently in second in the standings, with 56 points, which is 12 points behind PSG. Sportsbooks are listing their odds at +6600. Another potential value pick would be Lille, which is in fourth place right now with 49 points. It would be a long road for them to capture the title, which is why their odds are +30000.

Who will be relegated?
If you don’t have as much confidence in choosing a winner of Ligue 1 — or if the odds just don’t make it worth it to you — another option you have for a similar wager is to choose which teams will be relegated. Each season, three teams from Ligue 1 are relegated to Ligue 2, and three teams from Ligue 2 are promoted to Ligue 1. The bottom two teams in the Ligue 1 standings are automatically relegated, and the top two teams in Ligue 2 are automatically promoted. The final spot is determined by a two-legged playoff between the 18th place team in Ligue 1 and the third place team in Ligue 2. Whatever team wins that will be in Ligue 1 for the following season. The loser will be in Ligue 2.
From a betting perspective, you can wager on which clubs you think will be relegated after each season. This wager is a little easier to win, as you will be choosing only one of the two or three clubs that will be relegated. This makes it easier than simply picking one winner.
Because of this, though, the odds for relegation will be shorter than the odds for outright winner. The odds will work similarly, though, with the clubs most likely to be relegated getting the shortest odds, and those least likely getting the longest odds.
Pick who will score the most goals
If you’d rather focus on individual players, you have the option of also selecting the player that you think will score the most goals. This wager will work very similarly to the wagers for the league’s outright winner and relegated teams.
Sportsbooks will set odds for each of the top goal scorers in Ligue 1 based on who they think is most likely to score the most goals in the league. Those who are the most likely to lead the league in that category will have the shortest odds, with the others having longer odds.
When the Ligue 1 season was suspended back in March, the leader in this category was Kylian Mbappe (PSG) and Wissam Ben Yedder (MCO), who each scored 18 goals. Not far behind them were Moussa Dembele (LYN) with 16 goals, and Victor Osimhen (LIL) and Neymar (PSG) who each had 13 goals. Rounding out the players who have recorded double-digit goal tallies for the season thus far are Habib Diallo (MET) and Mauro Icardi (PSG) with 12 goals apiece; Dario Benedetto (MAR), and Kasper Dolberg (NIC) with 11 goals each; and Mbaye Niang (REN) and Denis Bouanga (ETI) with 10 goals each.
Be ready to hit the pitch when Ligue 1 returns
It was a great disappointment to football fans and soccer bettors alike when Ligue 1 (and many other sports leagues) were forced to shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. The top football league in France is set to return this month, though, and the action is sure to be intense with roughly 10 matches each for all clubs.
As Ligue 1 races toward the finish line, you can get in on the betting action when plenty of wagering options for this season still. Or, you could take all the excitement in now and do your research for the start of the 2020-2021 season, whenever that may start.
“Ligue 1 betting has little to do with PSG wagers. This league is so divers and has many great players. A simple goal bet is always thrilling and can be lucrative.“
