US Open tennis betting in a nutshell

The US Open is one of the world’s oldest and most prized championship tournaments in tennis, which excites me every year. It began way back in 1881 as the US National Championship, but now goes by just the US Open. US Open tennis is the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament on the tennis calendar each year. It starts on the last Monday of August and runs through the Labor Day holiday in the United States. While the action on the hardcourt is fierce each and every year, the same goes for betting on the US Open. Let’s take a look at how the tournament works, some of the top players involved, the odds, how to bet on it and lets not forget the bookmakers that offer US Open bets, here they are.

How the event is played

The US Open actually has multiple events within it, each with its own championship. There is men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles tournaments taking place. There are 32 entrants for each championship, with four rounds of preliminary matches followed by the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals. For all championships, each round is a single elimination match between two players — or two sets of doubles.

Matches are best-of-three sets for women and best-of-five sets for men. The first player or team to reach six points within a set wins that set. Sets must be won by at least two points. A tiebreaker will help settle any set that is tied at 5 apiece.

Interesting to know
The US Open is one of the few events that takes place on a hardcourt. Each year, before the event starts, it is resurfaced.

The top players in the world

Throughout the year, the Association of Tennis Professionals (or ATP) keeps a ranking of the best tennis players in the world. Currently, the top 10 men’s singles players, from 1 to 10, are Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Daniil Medvedev, Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini, Roberto Bautista Agut and Gael Monfils.

Nadal is the defending champion for the US Open, and he has won the event four times. Djokovic has won the tournament three times, the last time coming in 2018. Federer is one of the sport’s most celebrated players. He won the US Open five times in a row from 2004 to 2008, but hasn’t won since then.

On the women’s side, the top 10 players are Ashleigh Barty, Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina, Bianca Andreescu, Belinda Bencic, Petra Kvitova, Serena Williams and Kiki Bertens. Andreescu is the defending women’s singles champion, and it was her first title win last year. Osaka won the year before (also her first). Williams is one of the world’s top tennis players of all time — men or women. She was won the US Open women’s single title six times, the last time coming in 2014.

The defending champion men’s doubles team is Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah. The defending champion women’s doubles team is Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka. The defending champion mixed doubles team is Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray.

The most popular wagers in the spotlight

In the US Open and all tennis tournaments/matches, the most common bets are either wagers on who will the entire tournament and handicap/outright winners of specific matches and below is an example of the outright odds for the men in 2021.

Novak Djokovic+150
Rafael Nadal+350
Roger Federer+700
Daniil Medvedev+900

However, there are also other ways to bet on the US Open. One of the newest ways is to bet on the winning margin of a particular match. In this type of handicap bet, you won’t just be selecting a winner of a match, you’ll be choosing exactly how much they win by.

The most basic form of winning margin betting would be a straight handicap bet. In this type of wager, the online sportsbooks will set up a handicap line for one player/team against another, most likely by how many sets they’d win by. For example, Serena Williams may be favored by 1.5 sets over Kiki Bertens. For a wager on Williams to be successful, then, she’d have to win in straight sets. For a wager on Bertens to be successful, she’d need to win at least one set.

Other forms of winning margin betting would be how many total games one player/team wins versus their opponent. In this type of wager, you’d add up the total number of games won by each player/team, regardless of who won the match, and then make the wager determination based off that.

Increase your chances with the following tips

Some of the same names appear in the winner’s circle at the US Open every year in the men’s singles competition. In the 16 tournaments since 2004, there have been only seven different winners of the tournament. Things are a little different on the women’s singles side, especially recently. In that same time period, there have been 11 different winners, and there has been a different first-time winner for each of the last five tournaments.

On the men’s singles side, then, if you’re picking a player to win the tournament, you should probably go with one of the top players in the world – most likely either Nadal or Djokovic. On the women’s singles side, you may be able to find a diamond in the rough that has great odds by looking at the following table.

Serena Williams+550
Ashleigh Barty+650
Simona Halep+850
Naomi Osaka+1000

When you’re doing your pre-tournament research, look for players who have performed well on hardcourt surfaces before. The surface can be a big determining factor for how well players perform. In addition, make sure to figure out any injuries or ailments that any of the players are facing entering the US Open.

Hit the hardcourt and bet on the event

The US Open tennis tournament is sure to be a fiercely-competed event, both on the court and in the tennis betting world. It’s one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments held every year for both the men and the women, and there are plenty of great betting opportunities to be taken advantage of. Do your research before the tournament starts on who has performed well at US Opens in the past, who prefers the hardcourt and whether any players/doubles teams are playing well lately, and you could be on your way to winning big.

The US Open belongs to the Grand Slam events and that fact is enough to make a point and to integrate a useful article into my website.
