How Wimbledon is played
Wimbledon is held for two weeks every year from late June into early July. There are five main events at Wimbledon every year — gentlemen’s singles and doubles, ladies’ singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. All men’s matches are best-of-five sets, while all other events are best-of-three sets. The men’s and ladies’ singles event consists of a total of 128 players for each event. For the doubles events, there are 104 direct entrants to the men’s side and 108 to the ladies’.
Each event is a single-elimination format. Players are ranked and then matched up on a bracket accordingly, with the winner from each match moving onto the next round, and the loser being eliminated from the tournament. This continues until only one player is left at the end and crowned champion.

The top players in the world will be there
The ATP keeps a ranking of the best tennis players in the world for men’s singles, and the WTA keeps a ranking for the ladies’ singles. Currently, the top 10 for the men are made up of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Daniil Medvedev, Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini, Roberto Baustista Agut and Gael Monfils.
Djokovic is the two-time defending champion at Wimbledon, and he has won the title five times — in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019. Federer has claimed the title eight times — the last time coming in 2017. He also won the event five times in a row from 2003 to 2007. Nadal has won it two times, but not since 2010. The only other winner other than those three since 2002 was Andy Murray, who won in both 2013 and 2016.
On the ladies’ side, the top 10 ranked players are Ashleigh Barty, Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina, Bianca Andreescu, Belinda Bencic, Petra Kvitova, Serena Williams and Kiki Bertens. Halep is the defending champion from last year. Kvitova won in both 2011 and 2014. Williams has won Wimbledon an astounding seven times, with her last title coming in 2015. No other player currently ranked in the top 10 has claimed a Wimbledon ladies’ single title.
The defending champions for men’s doubles are Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah. The defending champions for ladies’ doubles are Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strycova. The defending champions for mixed doubles are Ivan Dodig and Latisha Chan.

Wager on how much a player or team will win by
Perhaps the most common way to bet on Wimbledon is to either pick the outright winner of the tournament before it even begins, since the odds are pretty good. Or to bet on the winner of individual matches. For the latter, there is another option for wagering, and that is to bet on the winning margin.
This works pretty similarly to a handicap-type of bet. Modern sportsbooks will set a handicap line for each match. For example, it may be Williams 1.5 sets against Bencic. For a wager on Williams to be successful in this scenario, she would have to win in straight sets. For a wager on Bencic to be successful, she’d have to win at least one set in the match.
There are other options for alternative winning margin bets on Wimbledon as well. For example, some online sportsbooks will offer wagers on how many points better one player will score against another for the entire match – regardless of who wins the match. They will then set a handicap line for the number of points based on who they feel is the favorite. Digital sportsbooks will set similar lines to these for all events in Wimbledon, both singles and doubles events, as well as gentlemen’s, ladies’ and mixed.
Strategies and useful tips
If you’re looking for betting tips on Wimbledon, it really depends on which event you’re talking about. On the men’s singles side, if you’re looking to pick an outright winner for the tournament, it’s advisable to go with one of the top-ranked players in the world. As you can see from the list of recent winners, there isn’t too much parity there.
On the ladies’ side, though, there is a lot of parity. This means you could potentially find a player who has longer odds who could win the tournament – and then return you a much bigger payout. Just have a look at this table.
Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to see which players/teams have performed well at Wimbledon in the past, as well as at some of the other major tournaments. However, one thing specific to Wimbledon is the grass playing surface. This can drastically alter how matches are played, so try to research who plays well on this surface. As always, make sure you’re in the know on any injuries or ailments that may be affecting any players, and look out for inclement weather that could affect matches as well.
